This contemporary Sociology course will cover a wide range of topics related to modern social structures, trends, and issues. It will explore the ways in which society is changing, and the impact that these changes have on individuals and communities.Specifically, there will be a focus on digital culture and changing social trends. Topics covered will include:- the use of digital media- the role of social media in shaping social norms, attitudes, and behaviours- the emergence and evolution of online communities, including the significance of gaming and influencers, AI, and its social dimension- contemporary gender, ‘race’ and social class issues.Overall, this course is designed to help students gain a deeper understanding of contemporary society and the various factors that shape it, taking account of the significance of the globalised digital age.Decolonised methods will also be an important part of this contemporary sociology degree. Decolonised methods are here understood to refer to the use of research methods that are grounded in the experiences and perspectives of marginalised communities, and that seek to challenge traditional power structures and ways of knowing in the global north.Such methods will be applied to address real-world problems and promote social change. These approaches will be embedded in this course by incorporating readings and case studies that highlight the experiences and perspectives of people from diverse backgrounds, including indigenous peoples, people of colour, and queer and trans people.Modules will also relate to communities and individuals’ experiences of being neurodiverse and having physical differences. The degree content will encourage students to explore these issues using research methods that are sensitive to issues of power and representation, such as community-based research or feminist research.Students will additionally be encouraged in their projects and essays to apply these research methods to current issues, such as environmental justice, racial inequality, or immigration policy.We will use classroom discussions and activities to explore the ways in which sociological knowledge can be used to promote social justice and equity by developing a nuanced and critical understanding of social issues.The foundation year course is designed to equip you with the skills and knowledge you need to continue onto your Honours degree. You will study a range of subjects that will underpin your future study and also gain valuable experience of university life, with full access to campus facilities. Successful completion of the year allows you to progress straight onto Level 4 of this course.
